King 〰️ Of 〰️ Hearts 〰️
With this room of moustached works, I was thinking about notions of sincerity and theatrical artifice. A moustache, unlike a beard, really performs its presence - it can only exist by consciously cutting away everything around it. I deliberately chose not to cut away everything surrounding the canvases so that the mechanics of producing and hanging a painting became transparent and as important as the works themselves. This allowed the spectator to be part of the ruse: less a passive beholder than an active participant.
