The Populars is a term used by a friend’s teenage daughter to describe the cool clique of kids at school who don’t always use their power for good. For this series I deliberately chose to paint some of the more recognisable, crowd-pleasing flowers. The paintings were made over two years with oil, artist’s linen and patterned upholstery fabrics. I was thinking about patching together my different working worlds – art and interiors – in the form of different backgrounds but also about patching old playground wounds.
